Rain can't stop Old Mal

CONSTANT rain didn't stop competitors or the crowd at Saturday's Old Mal Surf Championship at Greenmount Beach as part of nostalgia festival Cooly Rocks On.

Matt Aldridge took out the juniors, Greg Moir aced the seniors and Heath Norrish won the loggers division in less than favourable surf.

Organiser Dion Harris said he was really pleased with the turn out.

"We were really satisfied despite the weather," Mr Harris said.

"It was big surf, trying surf and the old mals are not designed for surf that big or that hollow."

Competitors celebrated at the Kirra Hotel on Saturday night marking the 21st anniversary of the club and the 20th year of the event, previously aligned with Wintersun before it packed up and moved to Port Macquarie.

"I think the whole event (Cooly Rocks On) is fantastic for the area and hopefully we can continue our association with it and let it live on," he said.

Mr Harris said he had only stepped up to the plate this year, after the previous organiser and ex-president of the Tweed Coast Old Mal Club Peter "Cocky" Stannard passed away from a heart attack on the beach at Double Island Point in March.

Stannard was a massive contributor to the long board surfing community as Disabled Surfing Association Tweed coordinator, Old Mal Australia coordinator, Queensland Old Mal Titles organiser and Gold Coast Malibu Club stalwart.

"We had a bit of a memorial for Cocky, 16 of his family members were there," Mr Harris said.

"It's fantastic when they all came out.

"I decided to step up this year and organise it but I had plenty of help."

The competition will be held for the 21st time as part of Cooly Rocks On 2013.
