Rally boss hits out at 'alarmist' critics

RALLY Australia chairman Garry Connelly has taken aim at critics of the event saying it is “no longer viable” to attack the event on its environmental merits.

Vocal opponents of the WRC event, to be held on the Tweed next month, have argued that it would cause countless damage to the local environment.

Mr Connelley said Rally Australia's organising committee had done the work to ensure the impact of the event was kept to a minimum.

“We have done an enormous amount of work on all aspects of the rally's potential environmental impact, made all our reports available to the community and various agencies, including the State and Federal governments and local councils,” he said yesterday.

“We understand some residents do not want this rally, but there are many more who can't wait for it to happen, look forward to the benefits it will bring and are fed up with the constant alarmist, unsubstantiated claims.”
