Real work begins on Kennedy Dr
MAJOR work on the long-awaited $7 million upgrade to Kennedy Dr began yesterday.
Preliminary work on the expansion of one of the Tweed's busiest roads began on October 24.
The first stage of work will convert the section of road between Limosa Rd and Gray St from two lanes to four.
Tweed Shire Council general manager Mike Rayner told the Tweed Chamber of Commerce and Industry the expansion was expected to take 20 weeks to complete, allowing for work on utilities to be completed first.
He said there were many utility services under the road and footpath.
Mr Rayner said the work would be done on one side of the road at a time in an effort to reduce traffic congestion and disruptions.
The work will also include resurfacing the road and adjusting the slope of the road from the centre to the kerb to enable large trucks to pass along the outside lanes without the risk of clipping existing overhead power lines.
Another three stages of the upgrade will follow when Tweed Shire Council secures the funding.
Tweed mayor Barry Longland said he hoped to see the full upgrade funded and completed within 12 months and work begun on the northern side of the road.
