Record nominations for Cup Day
AS EXPECTED the names of Murwillumbah Cup Prelude winner Warrior Within and Murwillumbah Newmarket winner Prince Lionheart are among a record-breaking number of nominations for Sunday's Murwillumbah Cup Day.
Both Warrior Within and Prince Lionheart are automatic qualifiers for Sunday's Cup event and Newmarket respectively, if connections choose to race them.
Warrior Within backed-up his recent Cup Prelude victory with an impressive third place in Saturday's $200,000 Ipswich Cup.
To date, connections have kept their own counsel about a possible return trip to Murwillumbah, but the fact that they have nominated the big brown four-year-old has buoyed the expectations of local racing fans.
In the Newmarket, 2008 winner Borsha's Warrior joined Prince Lionheart among the nominators.
So too, one of last year's favourites, the Gerald Ryan-trained Easy Play.
Trained locally, the connections have confirmed Easy Play has matured since her appearance in last year's race and are pleased with her preparation.
Tweed River Jockey Club officials were delighted with the extraordinary number of horses nominated for the meeting, with 258 thoroughbreds put forward for the club's showcase meeting.
In one event alone, 65 nominations were received.
“As far as noms go, this is as big as I can ever recall it,” long-serving chairman Bernie Quinn said. “It's a huge, huge response, and together with Racing NSW I hope we'll be able to fit in as many race horses as possible.”
Acceptances will be declared after 9am today.
