Trophy to honour netballer killed in crash with daughter

NETBALL friends of the late Niki Taylor will honour the passionate player's memory this month when the inaugural Niki Taylor Memorial trophy is presented to a Lismore Netball Association member.

Ms Taylor, 40 and her 11-year-old daughter Darcie were killed in a horrific head-on smash on the Pacific Highway at Kundabung, south of Kempsey on August 8.

Rachelle Watson, who met Niki 23 years ago through netball, said she was highly regarded, extremely loved and now sorely missed.

She said when Niki's mum Wendy Taylor approached the association about a memorial trophy, it was agreed it was a fitting way to honour Niki's dedication to the sport.

"The trophy will be presented to the person who embodies the love and spirit of netball by everything they do, just like Niki did," Ms Watson said.

Netball was more than a game for Niki; it was a major part of her life.

From when she was spotted at 17 by now Queensland Firebirds coach Tracey Robinson, to her lynchpin role on the 2009 World Masters Games committee, Niki's life revolved around netball.

"As a player, an umpire, a coach and assisting at the North Coast Academy of Sport as netball manager; Niki was organised, very giving and well liked."

Woodlawn Netball Club co-ordinator Debbie Melino said a perpetual trophy would be presented to a club member who embodied Niki's love and passion for netball.

The North Coast Academy of Sport will launch a memorial trophy in Niki's name.

The Niki Taylor Memorial Trophy and the Woodlawn Netball Club perpetual trophy will be presented on grand final day, September 13, by Niki's mother Wendy.
