Regulations spell doom for Cooly Hotel’s big red bus

COOLANGATTA Hotel's big red courtesy bus is sitting in a holding yard in Tweed and that is where it is likely to stay for the time being.

After announcing the bus and its route up the Gold Coast highway, the hotel had a visit from New South Wales Transport Department who delivered the bad news that the bus was not road worthy.

The Hotel's consultant and manager, Warren Barber said it was a great shame for hotel patrons and the hotel itself.

"Basically they have deemed it to be the same as a new surfside bus, it comes down to it not meeting the modern requirements, "Mr Barber said.

"When you look into it, the bus will never comply, it would have to be stripped back, have the frame x rayed and many other modifications and even then it might not pass."

The big red Leyland double decker was built in the early 70's and now might be retired for good.

"Yeah I think she's parked for good, personally I think it's a bit overboard, the bus is still registered to legally carry 50 people in Victoria," Mr Barber said.
