Report reveals Australia well placed to fight superbugs

AUSTRALIA is in a stronger position than other countries to win the war on superbugs in pets and live-stock, a new report reveals.

A nationwide survey of antibiotic resistance in disease-causing bacteria in Australian animals found low rates of resistance to critically important drugs.

The results compared well to other countries.

Professor Darren Trott said it was an "A-grade report" for agricultural industry and vets, but it was crucial to remain vigilant.

The news came with the launch of the Australian Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Ecology.
