Reports Aussie couple killed by Syrian rebels

AUSTRALIAN consular officials are attempting to confirm the deaths of two Australians reportedly killed by rebels in Syria.

Yusuf Ali and his wife Amira Ali were allegedly killed by members of the Free Syrian Army in their home at the weekend.

It is understood the couple had lived on the Gold Coast and Granville in Sydney's inner-west before moving to Syria.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Australia does not have an embassy or consulate in Syria and the government's capacity to deliver assistance in the country is limited.

If the deaths are confirmed it would bring the number of Australians killed in the conflict to seven.
