Bottle sparks 'suspicious package' concerns in Canberra

CANBERRA' S Parliament House is safe and sound despite the presence of a very dangerous item - a water bottle.

The home of Australia's federal politicians was a hive of activity briefly today after a "suspicious package" was found.

The package turned out to be a water bottle.

Australian Federal Police said the water bottle was disposed of properly - by putting it in a bin.

"What happened is when an individual decides to say that (an item) is unattended, you don't let people walk past the item," News Ltd reported the AFP as saying.

"It was a very short period of time (for a) quick assessment."

EARLIER: CANBERRA'S Parliament House is in lockdown after a package was found there a short while ago.

Media reports say the Australian Federal Police and other security services have blocked the main entry to Parliament House.

More to come as details emerge.
