Rescue crews called as abseiler falls to his death

RESCUE crews have retrieved the body of an abseiler who fell to his death trying to help his girlfriend in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

The man in his 30s and his partner in her 20s were abseiling at a popular point in Katoomba around 9:30am (AEDT) on Saturday when it is understood the woman became tangled in ropes halfway down the cliff.

Inspector Ken Shack-Evans says the man tried to help before falling over the cliff to his death.

"They have commenced abseiling in this area and shortly after have struck difficulties with the female becoming stranded on rope halfway down the abseil," he said.

"Unfortunately, the male person a bit further down the abseil has fallen off the cliff edge."
