TWEED Heads West residents fear their walking path is a health hazard that has been neglected by Tweed Shire Council.

The paved path runs for about a kilometre along the bank of the Terranora Inlet behind houses on Sunset Blvd and is a popular spot for dog walkers and residents.

In certain areas, the river has swallowed rocks installed to protect the banks causing high tides to erode gravel and sand making the pavers uneven and unstable.

In the worst areas, pavers have been replaced by concrete.

Resident John McKay said it was only a matter of time before someone broke an ankle, or fell onto the oysters below.

"It's a complete disgrace," Mr McKay said.

"This is public land and the council needs to look after it.

"There is danger points all the way along.

"This spot is beautiful but the rocks are subsiding, the pavement is eroding away, there's holes in the ground and soon someone is going to trip and fall onto the oysters below.

"Anyone on a walking frame or mobility scooter wouldn't have a chance."

Mr McKay said he had spoken briefly with a council employee taking photographs of the area about a month ago, and that not long after, workers had arrived to fix problem areas.

"I thought it was great that they came out, but it wasn't done properly," Mr McKay said.

"It was only a makeshift repair and the gravel and cement dust they used has washed away.

"It only lasted three weeks.

"It's time they came back and did the whole job properly or at least blocked off the area completely so someone doesn't seriously hurt themselves."

A Tweed Shire Council spokeswoman said the paved path had been problematic for some time.

She said the worst areas were being replaced with concrete as funds became available and advised anyone with concerns to contact the council.
