Petition launched for Daniel Morcombe overpass

SUNSHINE Coast residents have put together a petition to have the overpass where Daniel Morcombe went missing renamed Daniel Morcombe Bridge in his honour.

Daniel Morcombe was abducted while waiting for a bus under the Kiel Mountain Road overpass at Woombye on December 7 2003.

His abduction and death was one of the most investigated crimes in Queensland history and prompted increased national awareness on stranger danger.

Overnight Maroochy River resident Chris Sharkey drove past the memorial at the overpass where Daniel went missing.

He thought it could not only use a clean up but it should be painted to remember Daniel.

"It looked like it could use a good pressure wash and clean, I thought to myself 'why hadn't they named it after him yet?'" Mr Sharkey said.

When he returned home Mr Sharkey took to Facebook to start a group to call for the Kiel Mountain Road overpass to be renamed after Daniel Morcombe and painted red.

A change petition has also been created requesting Campbell Newman to back the name change.

The Daily have contacted Bruce and Denise Morcombe for comment on the renaming idea and await their response.

If you support the idea sign the petition here.
