Reward in providing local jobs
RON and Chree Reseck have employed more than 1000 local residents since 1990.
Providing employment and training opportunities had been a fulfilling experience, Mr Reseck said.
"The most rewarding aspect of being a licensee is helping young kids establish their career and watching them progress from crew members to managers.
"One of our managers, Mary-Anne Camilleri, has been with us since we opened the first restaurant 25 years ago, which is pretty special.
"We also now employ a lot of previous employees' children as second generation staff, including two of Mary-Anne's children."
Mr Reseck said he was most proud of having many long-term staff members at his restaurants.
"It's a sign that the crew really enjoy the work environment and camaraderie.
"Some of my other employees have even been with us for 10 to 15 years, which has been great."
In the week leading up to the 1990 opening of the North Mackay restaurant, the Daily Mercury reported the restaurant would employ more than 100 staff, including six managers, and a majority of casual workers. The 100 staff had been selected from more than 1500 applications.
"When I had four stores we peaked at about 580 employees - part-time, full-time and casuals," Mr Reseck said.
BLAZING THE TRAIL
MCDONALD'S North Mackay was a trailblazer in more ways than one.
When it opened at the intersection of the Bruce Hwy and Heaths Rd it was one of the first businesses in an area that has since become a thriving retail hub.
"It was the only building out there," Mr Reseck said. "We were on our own for years."
Back then it was surrounded by cane paddocks and Mr Reseck said one of the issues staff had to contend with was flies and insects.
"We were the only restaurant in the world with fly screens on our windows," he said.
But the location didn't concern Mr Reseck. On opening day in 1990, he told the Mercury, "It's in a prime position and an area of growth. We will have a lot more businesses built up around us."
