CONCERNS have been raised that the Lennox Head Rural Fire Service could remain at its current location on the corner of Park and Mackney Lanes for up to 10 years.

Ballina Shire Council recently gave in-principle support for the shed to move to a new location on The Coast Road.

However councillors yesterday voted to spend $55,000 on interim works at the current site, such as the driveway and kerb, car parking, fencing, landscaping and internal work.

Lennox Head Residents' Association president Fred Goodman questioned whether it needed to be done.

"I believe some of that money would be wasted if the proposition to move the shed away from that site ever eventuates," he said.

Cr Sue Meehan also said she had "real problems" spending money on that site.

"It (the shed) is an eyesore and I don't think spending this money is going to make any difference," she said.

"It's in the wrong spot; it's very problematic."

Cr Jeff Johnson said the Lennox RFS shed issue needed to be addressed "as a matter of urgency".

"That area is needed for parking," he said.

Despite the concerns about whether any money should be spent on the site, the council approved the $55,000 worth of works, and that is expected to start next month.

Development consent has been granted for the shed to remain at its current site for up to 10 years.

Council staff have said there remains ongoing uncertainty about when the fire shed would be relocated.

Cr Keith Johnson agreed: "I don't how many times we have tried to move that shed," he said.

"To assert that there is another option at this stage ... is pure fantasy."
