Riding with the sun

IF people were looking for a good reason to ride on the next sunny day then the solar-powered electric bike could be the answer.

A Tweed Heads business has started selling solar-powered electric bicycles to the Australian market.

Johnno's Camper Trailers owner Steve Russon said about four million units have been sold across Europe but they have only been available in Australia for eight to ten weeks.

"We have had them in here for about a week and a half and we sold two on Saturday," Mr Russon said.

The electric- motor bicycle uses a battery that is recharged in a solar powered recharger.

Mr Russon said the bike had limited top speed of 25kmh and had a range of 100km.

"It's popular because you can fold it down and take it in a camper or caravan," he said.

"You can go anywhere… anywhere a bike can go and you don't have to pedal too much."

Mr Russon said the solar-powered electric bike was sold in Europe for the past six years.
