Rivals say they want Slipper to contest poll

MOST of Peter Slipper's rivals for the seat of Fisher hope he contests the federal election.

LNP candidate Mal Brough was diplomatic when questioned about his bitter rival.

"The public will decide Mr Slipper's fate, they'll decide my fate. That's what democracy is all about. I'm here to do my job and I'll let Peter Slipper look after himself," Mr Brough said.

Predictably, Labor candidate Bill Gissane said he would like Mr Slipper to run.

Mr Slipper is a long shot to win the seat but could provide nuisance value and steal votes from the LNP, which would give the ALP a shot in the arm.

"There's no doubt we've got a good suite of candidates running here in Fisher representing a wide range of views,'' Mr Gissane said. "That gives people more of an opportunity to think about the fact there are more alternatives out there.

"I happen to be one of them.

Katter's Australian Party candidate Mark Meldon said Mr Slipper's candidacy would be good for competition and choice.

"I think it would be great, it could create better competition," he said.

"Peter also deserves a right of reply as far as allegations that have been made against him."

The Greens' Garry Claridge had similar sentiments.

"I think having Peter run is a good thing because the diversity of candidates is great, it gives people more choice," Mr Claridge said.

"He also obviously has experience in the field."
