Road surface goes down on Kirkwood Road
THINGS appear to be moving along nicely on the $17 million Kirkwood Rd project, with the road surface being put down on both the on and off-ramps this week.
The south bound off-ramp, located approximately 400m past the Kennedy Dr exit, is almost complete, with barriers in place, road surface down and only the line markings to go.
The south bound on-ramp is taking shape rapidly as well, with road surface almost complete.
Last week the site was a hive of activity, with concrete trucks and workers from contractor SEE Civil buzzing around the site.
The project has been delayed previously due to soil stabilization issues but now appears on track for a finish early next year.
Senior contracts engineer for Tweed Shire Council Jason Young told Daily News back in April that a finish date would be dependent on those soil issues.
"Anywhere between December of this year, but if soft soils don't behave the way we anticipate that could blow out to June, July, next year," he said.
It appears those soil issues did hold up progress but the problem has now been overcome.
The Kirkwood Rd project was first announced in May of 2011 and originally projected to be finished by late 2012.
Council engineers said the complete project would include an overpass over the highway along with a northbound off-ramp, southbound off-ramp and southbound on-ramp.
Work on the later stages could take up to the year 2020 and it is expected completely finishing the project will cost more than $34.5 million.
The road will provide access to the Pacific Highway and South Tweed CBD when completed and will relieve pressure from Minjungbal Dr.
