Rocking around the clock with Cooly Rocks On festival

COOLY Rocks On is in full swing today (Saturday), with the iconic street parade taking place along Musgrave St and Marine Pde from 9.30-11am.

Gold Coast Rockers will be one of many groups showcasing retro fashion and dance moves.

Publicity officer for the dance group Shirley Forbes has been coming to Cooly Rocks On for at least 20 years.

"I love Cooly Rocks On," Ms Forbes said.

"We stay in a beach house here for two weeks every year."

Ms Forbes said she'd love to see more young people get involved with rock'n'roll dancing.

Gold Coast Rockers president Sharon Warden said while today's parade would be the highlight, the whole affair was a great experience.

"It's good for the general public to be able to see what things were like in the 50s and 60s," she said.

Gold Coast Rockers has been together for 23 years and will have more than 50 dancers perform during the parade.

Cooly Rocks On CEO Bob Newman expects massive crowds for today's parade.

"The parade really kicks the whole thing off," he said.

"They've predicted showers, but I'll believe that when I see it.

"When it gets to Marine Pde, the crowd can be 20 deep and you can't see the bitumen."

While many travel from far and wide for the annual nostalgia festival, Mr Newman said it was essential for locals to get on board as well.

"The more the locals embrace the event, the more they dress up and decorate their shops, the more people from outside of the Tweed and Gold Coast will want to come and look at what's going on," he said.
