Rolling Thunder Vietnam to mark famous anniversary
AUSTRALIAN concert drama Rolling Thunder Vietnam – Songs That Defined A Generation will play Jupiters Hotel and Casino over two nights in August to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
Back by popular demand, the acclaimed production became one of the most talked about musical events of 2014, winning plaudits from audiences and critics alike during its national tour.
Rolling Thunder Vietnam showcases a cast including Wes Carr (Australian Idol winner) and Ben Mingay (Packed to the Rafters), and features many of the greatest rock songs of the Vietnam era, including classics by Steppenwolf, Joe Cocker, The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Billy Thorpe.
Producer Rebecca Blake said the way Rolling Thunder Vietnam had connected with people when it first toured Australia was really special.
“The positive responses from Vietnam Veterans and their families were overwhelming,” Blake said.
“It was as though they’d been waiting for years to experience their story on stage in such a vibrant and powerful way.
“It’s a tremendous thrill to be bringing the show back, especially in the 50th anniversary year of the Battle of Long Tan.”
Rolling Thunder Vietnam – which plays Jupiters from Friday, August 5 – combines personal stories of young Vietnam War soldiers to the tune of classic songs.
The production is based on first-hand interviews with Vietnam War veterans and actual soldiers’ letters. The stories revealed tell a tale of danger, combat, the rise of anti-war protest movements in the late 1960’s, comradeship and the toll of war on relationships and families.
The generation defining songs to appear in Rolling Thunder include Fortunate Son, All Along the Watchtower, Born to be Wild, and We’ve Gotta Get out of This Place.
