RON McLaughlin is planning to spend more than 50 days glued to the seat of his motorbike, all in the name of a good cause - cancer research.

On Saturday Ron set off on the first leg of his 18,200km trip around Australia with the hopes of raising money for a cause close to his heart.

The first stop on the schedule was for sentimental reasons Ron said, with the charity rider visiting his mother in Hervey Bay on Saturday to mark the start of his voyage.

"I started in Springwood and travelled up to Hervey Bay to say goodbye to my mother," Ron said.

"She's been very supportive, and has been helping to raise money for cancer research as well."

Losing both his father and brother to cancer within the past 10 years, Ron knows far too well the sadness of losing a loved one to the disease.

"I lost my dad to lung cancer in 2002, and then my brother more recently to cancer as well," he said.

"I've seen the pain people dealing with the disease have, and I wanted to help ease the burden.

"All of the money I raise on the trip will be donated to cancer research, to help people suffering from all types of cancer."

The next port of call will be Rockhampton and then Bowen according to Ron, who said he expects to be finishing the round trip by October 6.

"I've got a schedule of where I will stop and how far I will travel," he said.

"It's going be about 200km to 800km a day.

"Hopefully I'll finish on time."

The charity rider hopes to raise more than $20,000 during his 50 days on the road, with the proceeds of the ride going directly to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research.

Fraser Coast residents looking to donate to Ron's Ride around Australia can get behind cancer research by donating online.
