Roosters fly into World Cup squad
MICHAEL Jennings and Boyd Cordner have rounded off a special season by being named in the Kangaroos squad for the World Cup in the United Kingdom later this month.
Jennings' call-up rounds off a remarkable transformation for the Roosters centre, who had some
off-field issues before leaving the Panthers.
He can now celebrate a recall to the national squad as well as a grand final success in the same week.
Roosters teammate Cordner (pictured) is one of three debutants in Tim Sheens' 24-man squad alongside Dally M prop of the year Andrew Fifita and Canberra and Queensland back-rower Josh Papalii.
There are five survivors from the last World Cup in 2008 - won by New Zealand - Test captain Cameron Smith, vice-captain Paul Gallen, North Queensland halfback Johnathan Thurston, Melbourne fullback Billy Slater and South Sydney fullback Greg Inglis.
Of the Test side which beat New Zealand earlier this year, only the injured Justin Hodges, Kurt Gidley and Anthony Watmough were not retained.
Sheens said a number of Roosters were considered but the international flavour in the flag-winner's side meant there were not many candidates.
"You look at how many New Zealanders are in their squad and other guys that will be playing across the World Cup," Sheens said.
"Most of the Roosters squad will feature in some jersey in the World Cup.
"With Jennings that was an obvious one for us."
Sheens said Roosters half-backs James Maloney and Mitchell Pearce were possibilities for the World Cup and it was difficult choice for him to make on who to take to the UK.
"The halves were considered as well, that was a tough call," he said.
"The three that we've used are the incumbent and have played well.
"Particularly with Cherry-Evans being back-up to Cooper (Cronk) and Johnathan (Thurston), that will be an interesting contest for us during the World Cup as well because all three are in great form."
