Rose holds lead as big names struggle

GOLF: World No.1 Jason Day and Tiger Woods both had rounds to forget on the US PGA Tour at Torrey Pines.

The duo played together alongside world No.3 Dustin Johnson in the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego but struggled, with Day finishing one-over 73 on the south course to be eight shots behind leader Justin Rose (65).

Woods shot a four-over 76, with Johnson ending the opening round on an even-par 72.

Olympic champion Rose had six birdies and two eagles on the north course, along with three bogeys, to finish seven-under.

Rose holds a one-shot lead over Canadian Adam Hadwin, who last week shot a round of 59 at the CareerBuilder Challenge.

Marc Leishman and Cameron Percy are the leading Australians, with the duo in a share for 19th on three-under.

Greg Chalmers and John Senden are a shot back at two-under, while Aaron Baddeley and Brett Drewitt finished with a one-under 71.

Fellow Aussies Rod Pampling (72), Cameron Smith (73), Stuart Appleby (74), Geoff Ogilvy (76) and Steven Bowditch (78) were all off the pace.
