Rowers collect medals

MURWILLUMBAH Rowing Club members, Rick Kranen and John Ryan, travelled “across the ditch” last weekend, to compete in the New Zealand National Masters Championships.

The event, a prelude to the World Masters Games starting on Saturday in Sydney, proved very fruitful with the pair arriving home with five medals each.

Kranen, three times C Grade Australian Champion, won two gold, two silver and a bronze medal and is now the New Zealand C Grade Champion as well.

Ryan also enjoyed great success, winning one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

“Rick and I had to overcome the New Zealand climate, borrowed equipment and the language barrier,” Ryan said.

The pair, along with a small team from Murwillumbah and Tweed, now head to Sydney to compete in the World Masters Championships over the next two weeks.
