OPPOSITION Leader Bill Shorten said an announcement made at night that cleared him of wrongdoing while he was a union boss spoke for itself.

About 8pm on Friday the trade union royal commission announced there was nothing to indicate Mr Shorten had engaged in unlawful conduct. Mr Shorten questioned this timing.

"If you were being paid millions of dollars to write a report do you think you could do it in a timeline and not rush it at the last minute?" he said.
