Pride of place for medals

A GRANT of $2175 was issued to the Kingscliff RSL Sub-branch for a display case housing a Medals of Service to Australia collection.

Kingscliff RSL committee member and medal collector Mick Kelly was overjoyed to receive the grant to purchase the case.

“This is my pride and joy,” Mr Kelly said.

“With coins there is nothing personal, but with a medal, it has a bit of history,” Mr Kelly said.

There are 50 medals in the case, ranging from 1860 to medals from the present war in Afghanistan.

Richmond Labor MP Justine Elliot announced the funding at the Kingscliff RSL. She said the case preserved a part of Australian conflict history.

“The Labor government is committed to making sure we honour the sacrifice our veterans are making,” Ms Elliot said.

The funding is part of the Department of Veteran Affairs, Saluting Their Services commemoration grants program.

“We work closely together to make sure they get the services and the support they need,” Ms Elliot said.

The medals will be displayed in The Kings- cliff RSL in a room with many other important photographs and memorabilia.
