TRAFFIC stopped on Sydney's Pyrmont Bridge on Thursday morning as a giant inflatable duck floated into Cockle Bay.

The six-storey recreation of the bath time favourite will form the centrepiece of the Sydney Festival opening celebrations at Darling Harbour on Saturday.

Designed by Dutch artist Florentine Hofman, the duck was chosen because "it really is a universal symbol of happiness", festival director Lieven Bertels told the ABC.

The duck will be on show in Sydney until January 23.
