Rudd praises builders for recovery

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd says the building industry has been crucial in the country’s economic recovery.

Mr Rudd told the Master Builders Australia (MBA) annual national conference on the Gold Coast yesterday the building industry had risen to the challenge of the “most ambitious nation-building recovery plan in Australian history”.

“I salute your industry,” he said.

“Most of (the recovery) would not have been possible without the active participation of you, the building men and women of Australia.”

Mr Rudd said the Nation Building plan to date had resulted in almost 50,000 building, construction and renovation plans approved, with over 23,000 projects commenced.

The prime minister announced that under stage two of the Social Housing Initiative, a further 543 dwellings would be built on the Gold Coast, worth an estimated $144 million to the construction sector.
