Rudd remains preferred leader, but Coalition support rose

THE election battle between Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has levelled the results of the latest Newspoll show.

Completed for News Ltd publications, the poll shows that the remarkable lift to Labor's fortunes - up nearly 10% to 38% in just three weeks - has slowed.

The poll shows Labor's primary vote has flattened to 37%, down just one point from two weeks ago, while the Coalition's primary rose three percentage points to 45%.

However, Mr Rudd remains preferred leader over Mr Abbott, sitting on a 50% approval rating compared to 34% for Mr Abbott.
