Rudd swamped in Brisbane

KEVIN Rudd may have been "humbled" by respected Labor stalwart Anthony Albanese's decision to back him, but he was overwhelmed by the show of support from Joe and Jane Bloggs.

In an emotional press conference, Infrastructure Minister, Anthony Albanese announced he would support Mr Rudd in Monday's leadership ballot because he believed it was in the "best interests of the party".

A tear ran down Mr Albanese's cheek as he told the media of his decision and recounted his morning phone call to Prime Minister Julia Gillard, when he told her of his decision and offered to resign as leader of the house.

Hours later while mobbed by an excited public at Queen Street Mall, Mr Rudd, wife Terese by his side, told reporters Mr Albanese had not been the only one to shed tears this morning.

''There were very few dry eyes in the Rudd household this morning, not about what he had to say about yours truly but what he had to say about us as a movement and the importance of owning all the good stuff we've done together,'' Mr Rudd said.
