STATE OF ORIGIN: Dane Gagai looks set to wear the Maroon

RUGBY LEAGUE: Dane Gagai looks set to wear the Maroon colours again in this year's State of Origin.

The former Souths Sharks junior made his debut for Queensland in last year's series win.

Although his NRL club the Newcastle Knights have been poor this season, Gagai has been in good touch.

Mackay Cutters chief executive officer and former Souths Sharks football manager Troy Rovelli thinks Gagai is a good chance to be in the team.

"One thing that Queensland has always been noted for is their loyalty to players," he said.

"He (Gagai) got called in last year and did a great job.

"If he does get the call-up it's a great reward for a great young man."

It is believed Ben Barba will not make the team despite being in great form for the Cronulla Sharks.

Daly Cherry-Evans, on the comeback from an injury, is unlikely to be named.

The official team announcement will be made tonight.
