As Russian warships circle HMAS Sydney sits off the Coast

AS NATIONAL media report that Russian warships are circling waters south of

Papua New Guinea in a "show of strength", Coast sea gazers got their own slice of the action.

An Australian Navy ship, the HMAS Sydney, was spotted powering north past Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland yesterday as seen in the video posted on Facebook by Sarah Leah below.

News Ltd had reported yesterday that the fleet of Russian warships, including a cruiser, destroyer, tug boat and refueller, were patrolling international waters south of Bougain-ville on Wednesday morning.

A spokesman for the Department of Defence could not confirm specifics about HMAS Sydney or the Russian ships' responsibilities in the international waters.

"HMAS Sydney is currently in the South Queensland area to be available to support G20 activities," the spokesman said.

"HMAS Sydney is available for maritime surveillance patrols as required."

The recently upgraded HMAS Sydney is one of four guided missile frigates in the Australian fleet and has been deployed to the Middle East four times, according to the Navy's fleet detail webpage.
