Salt cave serves up a new recipe for healthier skin

FELICITY Walker is encouraging people to spice up their lives and spend some time in Central Queensland's first salt cave.

The beauty and massage therapist works at the Skin Deep Rejuvenation Clinic in Rockhampton, which last week opened the Skin Deep Salt Cave.

The clinic's owner, Kitty Wren, said salt therapy was a non-invasive treatment ideal for people of all ages who suffered from asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and skin conditions such as eczema.

The alternative therapy uses a halo generator to reproduce and monitor the therapeutic microclimate of the natural salt cave or mine.

Clients simply relax on some comfy chairs in the "cave" and breathe in the dry salt aerosol.

Felicity said children often thought the white walls and floor were snow, although it wasn't cold and the temperature was controlled by the clinic.

She contested arguments by sceptics there was no scientific evidence to support the therapy.

"In Germany and Russia it is prescribed by doctors," Felicity said.

"They have hospitals, hotels and restaurants in salt caves."

Asthma Australia has warned that inhaling salt solutions in high concentrations can bring on asthma attacks.

But Felicity said they went through training to understand the different levels of salt therapy, and took precautions to ensure the safety of clients.
