Salt outdoors day for kids

KIDS, it's time to put down the video games and get out and play.

The Analogue Play Project is hosting a Get Out and Play Day in Salt next month, designed to get kids outdoors and active.

Event organiser Jules Beaumont says kids thrive on unstructured outdoor play.

"Kids follow their own ideas but when they are following media they are using someone else's ideas and this is not always a healthy thing for development," Mr Beaumont said.

Until the last decade, children's media use was limited to watching television or listening to music, now many kids use media as entertainment for three hours a day.

Taking place for the first time in Salt Village Parklands on Saturday, March 8, from 9am to noon DST the free community event is for kids aged 2 to 8.

Children will be able to get hands-on with activities including crafts, yoga classes, face-painting, kite making and more.

Mr Beaumont said it was important for parents to get involved in their children's play and network with other parents.

"It's about making the time and getting your kids outdoors which isn't that hard," he said.

"Bringing awareness to the public and getting parents to talk about play is the key."

Entertainer Benny Time will perform on the amphitheatre stage.
