Salt beach has successfully held the Kellogg's Nurti Grain Ironman and Ironwomen trials over September 14 and 15.

The event is used to filter out up and coming athletes in the sport such as Trevor Hendy junior, the son of the great ironman champion of the 80's and 90's.

With a southerly wind blowing and over a metre of swell running, competition was fierce and frantic in the qualifying heats.

Competitors from across the country vying for a place in the big show slugged it out over the ski, board and swim leg in each heat, the swell and timing of the competitors run out the back determining race positions.

With fine weather, plenty of spectators turned out to watch the action, allot of family and friends were on hand to support their charges.

Salt SLSC members were busy hosting the event and making sure they did their part to help the two days run smoothly.

Club President Mark Humphrey said the event was a great economic boost for the area and his club, who were selling food and drink to raise money.

"We raised a couple of thousand dollars for the club at the barbeque which is great, "Mr Humphrey said.

Unfortunately the club did not have any qualifiers for the big show but as time goes on and membership grows they are sure to produce some excellent athletes.
