Samsung S7 and S7 edge put through 3360 tests

MOBILE phone reception in regional areas can be downright dodgy.

So is your phone network to blame?

Or could it be the phone you are using?

Talk to anyone and you soon realise some telcos are better than others when it comes to phone reception and internet speeds.

But few people realise there can be a big difference between phones themselves.

Telstra, for its part, carries out test on some of the major phone makers.

The tests cover features like calling, data, voice quality, Telstra branded app support and network compatibility.

Telstra says the latest phones to be put through their paces were the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

Here's what happened.

Telstra performed 3,360 unique types of tests for each phone - spanning things like protocol performance, antenna/receiver sensitivity tests, and user experience test as well as voice quality and data throughput testing.

The telco spent 1,068 person hours testing - if one person was to do it alone, it would take 134 working days!

Telstra's team conducted 68 hours of drive testing each phone- driving handsets around urban and regional locations constantly testing voice and data services on live network.

They made 4500 test voice calls.

They also transferred 530 GB of data on the road and 1.1 TB of data in their labs - testing all the things you love to do on your phone like internet browsing, video streaming and different types of file transfers.

And the result?

Both phones have secured our Blue Tick.

"This is especially great news for customers living in or visiting rural  and regional areas because they offer the best handheld coverage performance in regional coverage areas,'' Telstra says on its website.

They are Cat 9 meaning they are capable of download speeds of up to 350Mbps (typical download speeds are 5-150Mbps in 4GX areas and 2-50Mbps in 4G areas).

The GS7 and GS7 edge also support next-generation voice calling (voice over LTE) on Telstra's network which delivers high-definition voice quality and faster call set up times.
