Sand on march at Kingscliff

LIKE sands through the hourglass so are the days of erosion at Kingscliff.

As the summer sunshine slowly returns to the popular tourist beach it appears that sand, too, has made a comeback.

The southern end of Kingscliff beach is distinctly shallow, a sharp contrast to the situation earlier this year.

"It was only two months ago we almost lost the surf club," Kingscliff Coast Guard Captain John Parnell told the Daily News.

"Today we've got all the sand back at the southern end, there's a beach," he explained.

Ahead of the usually busy tourist season, Tweed Shire mayor Kevin Skinner is proud as punch.

"Yeah, there's a massive build-up of sand," Mr Skinner said.

"It carries about 100 metres out to sea, which is a good build up."

When the Daily News visited Kingscliff yesterday, the surf club still teetered on the edge of a sand-bag wall and there was not much difference next door at the holiday park.

"Here's hoping we see a return there before Christmas," Mr Skinner said.

"That's nature isn't it? It does these things, it's cyclical and we can't predict it."

Cr Skinner said he's looking forward to the results of an Environmental Impact Study which will determine long term solutions for the town's recurring erosion problem.

State Environment Minister Robyn Parker announced $75,000 worth of funding for an EIS on August 7 after it was revealed Natural Disaster Funding was not applicable to coastal erosion.

The results of the study will not be known for another 12 months.

Tweed Shire Council estimated it would cost as much as $8 million to completely safeguard against future loss of beach due to erosion.

Sandbags are supporting the holiday park and the vertical sea wall at the surf club.
