Save Kirra Beach From Terminal Death.
A desperate plea to save our beach,
by Ivy Mullins
As of 2014 if the development goes through, the Kirra beach as we know it will be altered beyond repair. Consisting of 3 resort hotels, a cruise ship terminal, reclamation of the beach for commercial and residential development and construction of rock break walls to create a marina and ocean terminal suitable for a large cruise the new development will not go unnoticed. An estimated 263 species of animals will be affected with five of them being critically endangered prior to the development, these animals lives are simply being compromised for the sake of money. And that's not even the only environmental aspect of the production, with the ocean floor being dredged as part of the production the Kirra break that is so well known not only here in Australia but around the world, will be lost to the cruise ships and forever damaging buildings including hotels and a proposed casino. Taking the break out of Kirra for those who are unfamiliar with the waves is like taking the Opera House out of Sydney but even that simile lacks context as it's a man made object so it would be better compared to removing Uluru from the centre of Australia itself. What was once a relaxed environment, vibe and waves at Kirra will be traded for the noises and pollution of the cruise ships, the artificially illuminated casino and hotels and the constant reminder that the beach no longer belongs to everyone. Why is it that we as human society feel the need to leave a mark on every pure untouched thing. It's like we refuse to accept that nothing is good enough unless there is a manmade production on it to say so, not only is it unconstitutional but it's immoral when did the government trade their morals for money? When did our wildlife and the greater good of the community become compromised to boost bank accounts? And finally when did the human race become so egotistical that we think we have the right to build on every single wonder the environment gives us?
