Say cheese, speedsters

GOLD Coast police have added a speed camera to their arsenal in an effort to combat speeding and reckless driving around road works on the Pacific Mwy near Robina.

Member for Mudgeeraba Ros Bates said she met with senior police in the region about the issue of motorists speeding through road works.

“We had a camera on Exit 79 and it worked so well,” Ms Bates said.

“So for the M1 upgrade between exits 73 and 77 we have a rotational speed camera.”

Ms Bates said the camera was not a permanent fixture and could be moved to different parts of the 80kmh road work zone.

“The police chose the area by the number of accidents and in locations where both lanes can be monitored,” she said.

Despite the new camera, Ms Bates said there was a problem with drivers not paying attention.

“We are still having people speeding through that section of road,” she said.

“Even with the MP signs all over my car, I still have people driving up the back of me in that 80kmh area and I'm doing the speed limit.”

Queensland Police was unavailable for comment.
