Scared mum locks herself in bedroom after alleged threats

A WOMAN was forced to barricade herself in her room and phone for police after her partner allegedly made a series of threats against her.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court, the woman's 42-year-old partner appeared in the dock charged with breaching a domestic violence order.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Brad Dick alleged the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, released "a tirade of verbal abuse and threats" towards the woman.

He said the man was a repeat domestic violence offender.

Police arrested the man at the couple's One Mile home on Monday night, after officers were called to the address in relation to the domestic incident.

After the man made the alleged threats, the woman barricaded herself in her room and phoned police in apparent fear of being attacked.

The man was taken to the watchhouse and charged.

In opposing bail, Sgt Dick said the man posed an unacceptable risk of re-offending based on his criminal history.

"The couple are clearly in a dysfunctional relationship and their children are in care," he said.

Sgt Dick said the man also had prior convictions for failing to appear in court.

Defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough said the man had a "dated" criminal history.

He suggested the man could be released on bail with strict conditions not to contact his partner or visit her address.

Magistrate Donna MacCallum said while the offence did not involve any actual physical violence, the threats allegedly made against the woman were "serious". She said if the man was found guilty of the charge, he would likely go to prison.

The man was refused bail and the matter was adjourned to September 10.
