Canteen secrets revealed in book

THE secret is out.

For the first time Murwillumbah High will give away the secrets behind the host of awards that decorate the school canteen walls.

Their recently launched and first ever recipe book has "hit the streets."

"Mmm...will...u...b...a...cook, recipes for success", with over 50 contributions from Murwillumbah High's Local community, has sold over half of the 1000 published within the first month of its publication.

The inspiration behind the book is canteen manager, for the past 16 years, Marilyn Butters.

"Over the years we have catered for many morning teas and lunches and with the number of people asking for recipes, I thought it would make a good fundraiser," she told My Daily News.

"I wasn't expecting to do one of such high standard.

"But the gasps of amazement when people saw it for the first time was fantastic."

During her years as canteen manager Ms Butters rates the recipe book as equal to many highlights, including the Diamond Level award, the highest food and service rating accorded to schools by the NSW Canteen Association.

More recently she was chosen in the top 13 canteen managers in the state and last year won the coveted National Directors Award for Outstanding Contribution to Public Education.

"Cooking is much more than just food," she said.

"It brings people together, not just around the dining table, but to share recipes and experiences of what worked and what didn't.

"Offering suggestions to each other is another factor.

"It's lovely when someone compliments you on your cooking."

Lyndall Reeve, the school's P and C President, has worked with Ms Butters to bring the book to life.

"It would never have been possible without the generosity of Allianz and other valued sponsors," she said.

Principal Warrick Simmons said special features of the book include the stunning photos and student art work, including images of Mt Warning, and the diverse contributions of the school community.

"We are delighted that Ms Butters has revealed the secret ingredients of her famous school specials that bring such joy to our students and staff."

The recipe book can be purchased at the Murwillumbah High School front office, on Riverview St, Murwillumbah during school hours.
