School supports Sailability

TWEED River High School has backed a plan to keep a shipping container on the banks of Terranora Creek to store sailing boats.

School principal Narelle Howell has provided a letter to the Tweed branch of volunteer group Sailability supporting a development application for the placement of the $12,000 “modified shipping container” beside Dry Dock Rd.

The group lodged its application, which includes the school's supporting letter, on June 16.

It involves repositioning a shipping container currently on the site against an existing shed and modifying it.

The application reveals the previous NSW government just before the March state election approved the use of the land for the 12.1-metre shipping container through its Land and Property Management Authority.

Under the plan the Tweed branch of Sailability NSW would use the shipping container to store sailing boats and equipment for use by children and young adults with a physical or mental disability.

The group has told Tweed Shire Council the area would be used between 9am and 2pm each Wednesday during the school term by up to 20 children, who mostly would be brought to the site on two mini buses.

Each boat would accommodate two people, with each child with a disability supervised by his or her carer.

The proposed shipping container would be positioned immediately against the eastern side of an existing storage shed used by Tweed River High School for storage of boats and equipment.
