School wears red for Daniel

A TERRANORA school was one of many around the nation that paid tribute to missing Sunshine Coast schoolboy Daniel Morcombe yesterday.

Motorists and pedestrians passing Terranora Public School would have seen the simple message on the school board that read: “We remember Daniel Morcombe.”

Terranora Public School principal James Hackett put the sign up to acknowledge the tragic loss of Daniel's life.

“It's red day to remember that beautiful little boy,” Mr Hackett said.

“Every parent in my community would be touched.”

He said he chose not to raise the sensitive issue at the school assembly.

Instead, classroom teachers had individually spoken to the classes about the incident and potential dangers facing them.

“We do that in the classrooms ... (where) the individual relationships between staff and teachers (already exist).”

He said he wanted to tread very carefully given the extent of the media coverage and the fact that the suspect was facing court on the same day.

The purpose was also to raise knowledge of risks in the community Mr Hackett said.

“First and foremost is the safety of their schoolchildren,” he said.

“Second, that they learned something while they are here.”

Mr Hackett said, while many in the community were going out of their way to add red to their outfit, it was not necessary for students.

“It suits our school ... the kids didn't have to do anything,” he said.

Students at Terranora Public School wear red polo shirts, hats and skirts as part of their uniforms.

“I've got staff here in red wristbands, in red scarves,” Mr Hackett said.
