Scout leader jailed for sex abuse
A SCOUT leader who molested a teenage girl during a “sex ed” lesson and repeatedly abused his stepchildren will be behind bars until 2021.
The man, aged in his 50s, has admitted a catalogue of sickening sexual offences against his stepdaughter, two stepsons and a female scout.
Ipswich District Court heard the man molested the 14-year-old scout, a friend of his stepson, in September 2008 in front of the boy – telling him he would teach him how to please a girl.
A month later he took her to the scout den where he again molested the girl.
Crown prosecutor Clayton Wallis said the man had used the girl as “some sort of teaching aide... of what to do with girls when he was older”.
Mr Wallis said when the man also repeatedly abused his stepchildren over four years, he told them “he wanted to teach them” about sex.
“He was using this pseudo-sexual education excuse throughout his offending,” Mr Wallis said.
From 2005 to 2009 the man sexually abused his stepchildren and even continued to rape his stepdaughter around the same time he faced court over the scout abuse allegations.
The offending only stopped when the man, who had no prior criminal convictions, was arrested and taken into custody.
When his stepdaughter, who was aged between nine and 13, resisted, the man would call her a “lesbo” and that she had “better get used to it – you'll do this when you're older”.
The girl started wearing long pants and belts to bed to protect herself from his sexual attacks but she was violently raped four times.
The two stepsons were aged between eight and 13 and seven and 11 over the period they were molested.
The man had been in a de facto relationship with the children's mother since 1998 and he blamed her for his offending.
In a letter written to the mother found in his car, the man wrote: “No affection from you but seemed to get it from (the stepdaughter). Tried to tell you but didn't seem to listen”.
The man claimed the girl “wanted it” and that he was merely succumbing to her desires.
But he repeatedly threatened that he would hurt the children if they exposed the abuse.
The man pleaded guilty to two charges of maintaining a sexual relationship – relating to his stepdaughter and stepson – attempted rape of his stepdaughter, four charges of raping his stepdaughter, three charges of indecent treatment of one stepson, four charges of indecent treatment of his stepdaughter and one charge of indecent treatment of his other stepson.
He also pleaded guilty to seven charges of indecent treatment of the 14-year-old scout.
The man was sentenced to 14 years jail and will be eligible to apply for parole after he serves 80% of his sentence.
As 489 days spent in custody awaiting sentence were declared as time already served, the man will be eligible to apply for parole in February 2021.
Defence barrister Steve Kissick said his client was prepared to do his time in jail and undergo sexual-offenders' rehabilitation courses.
“In prison he is a mentor for other young people,” Mr Kissick said.
A psychological report shows the man refuses to admit he is sexually attracted to children.
