Time abroad affords budding journo a broader perspective

FRESH from travel in Europe and Third World Central America, our new cadet reporter, Katie Cameron, is excited to be starting her career in the Rose City.

Katie has lived in Toowoomba most of her life, and has recently returned home from six months abroad.

She spent six weeks volunteering in a Guatemalan orphanage, as well as a semester of study in Germany.

"Living abroad is definitely a life-changing experience," Katie said.

"Guatemala really gave me a different perspective on what we call 'First World problems'."

"I was seeing people living in dumps and begging for food on the streets, and some of my Facebook friends were complaining about things like slow internet."

She lived with a host family and spent five hours a day with orphanage babies and children under four years old.

"It gives you such a great feeling, when they toddle up to you and all they want is a big hug and some attention," she said.

She said the chance to live as business student in Germany for five months was a great way to see other European countries as well.

"I love speaking German, and I also got to spend my weekends in Paris, Greece and Barcelona."

She returned from her trip mostly unscathed, apart from a broken shoulder blade while horse riding in Greece.

"I was lucky because I was due to fly home the very next day. I didn't know I broke it until I got it checked back in Australia," she laughed.

Now fully recovered, Katie will move to Warwick in the next few weeks, and start her new job as a cadet reporter with the Daily.

She will graduate from USQ with a Bachelor of Arts (German and Journalism) and a Bachelor of Business (Tourism) in November.
