Seagulls on a high

TWEED Heads Seagulls coach Ben Anderson expects his recruits to ruffle a few feathers when they debut against Souths Logan Magpies on Sunday.

And why wouldn’t he, with the Seagulls set to field arguably their most formidable line-up since the 2007 premiership-winning outfit.

Gold Coast Titans squad members Shannon Walker, Dominique Peyroux, Kayne Lawton, Selasi Berdie, Will Matthews and Ben Ridge were all named in the Tweed Heads 17 yesterday.

However, it’s the four fresh faces Anderson is most eager to unleash in the Queensland Cup season-opener at Davies Park.

In particular, former Gold Coast Titans hardman Aaron Cannings is tipped to make a huge impact up front, while Papua New Guinean World Cup representative Rod Griffin and rising star Josh Starling are expected to bring plenty to the contest from the bench.

Former Magpies playmaker Matt King is also set to star when he teams up with Queensland Cup veteran Brad Davis in the halves.

“Aaron and Josh had a really good off-season, looked really strong,” Anderson said.

“Griffin and Matty have been playing very well too and I’m looking forward to seeing them run out for us.

“It’s a bit of a mixed bag, particularly with the guys coming back from the Titans, but hopefully they can work well into the new team. All I know is that all the boys are jumping out of their skins to get the season under way.”

Tweed Heads’ first home game is in round three against Mackay at Piggabeen Sports Complex.
