Seagulls wary of cornered Comets

“BEWARE the wounded beast” has been drummed into competition pacesetters, Tweed Heads by coach, Ben Anderson, in the lead-up to the Seagulls' Intrust Cup rugby league game against lowly Central Com-ets at Piggabeen Sports Complex this afternoon.

The Comets are winless after three rounds but Anderson has drilled into his players that the visitors will not be easybeats.

“They just have too much talent in the team to stay on the bottom for too long,” Anderson said.

“The creative Nat Bowman returns at halfback and he and their experienced rake, Tevita Latu, will give them plenty of direction in the rucks where games are won and lost.

“Big Nick Kenny comes back from the Broncos and he'll give them the go-ahead up the middle, so with that trio sure to be in the thick of the action my blokes cannot afford to go onto the field believing a win is a formality.”

Anderson has made several changes to his line-up, with Cody Nelson and Dean Murphy earning promotion following excellent form in the Bycroft game, however he has lost the in-form Luke O'Dwyer to the Titans.

“Naturally we'll miss Luke's input but all of us are really pleased for him getting the call up from John Cartwright (Titans coach),” Anderson said.

Nelson's return to the Seagulls eases the blow in losing O'Dwyer.

“Cody was having a great season last year before an ankle injury ended his season early,” Anderson said.

“His performances in the Bycroft Cup show he has made a complete recovery from reconstructive surgery during his long stint on the sidelines.”

Kick-off is at 3.30pm and the game will be preceded by a Bycroft Cup A grade match between Tweed Seagulls and Bilambil Jets at 1.145pm. Because of an expected heavy track, the earlier Seagulls-Bilambil Under 19s and reserve grade games have been postponed so as to avoid giving the playing surface too much wear and tear prior to the two major games.
