Seal update: The little fella didn’t make it

THE fur seal who washed up on the rocks at Greenmount Beach early this year has died at Sea World after his condition took a turn for the worse.

Vets were hopeful of a full recovery as the New Zealand fur seal seemed to be on the mend, when suddenly he took a turn for the worst and passed away.

Carrying several bite injuries inflicted by what was believed to be two different shark species, the weak animal had travelled well out of his normal habitat when surfers noticed him on the rocks during a large swell event on July 1 this year.

Initially Sea World and other animal rescue officers observed the seal and left him over night to see if he just needed a rest, but the next morning he was still on the rocks and the decision was then made to capture and treat the animal.
