Search for missing bushwalkers

EMERGENCY volunteers, police and the rescue helicopter this morning started a search for three missing bushwalkers near Tomewin.

Tweed Police Inspector Greg Carey said the three young adults set out about 9am yesterday on Mount Cougal and planned to go on a four to five hour hike.

"Last night at 6pm NSW Police were contacted by concerned family members when the bushwalkers did not return," Insp Carey said.

"They attended the carpark and found their car still there."

Insp Carey said a significant thunderstorm passed through the area yesterday afternoon.

"The Police search co-ordinator arranged a search with police, SES, VRA and the Lifesaver 4 (Westpac) helicopter, which has commenced.

"At this point in time no one has been found and the search continues."

"That area of bushland crosses back and forth from NSW to Queensland.

"As far as we're concerned the state border doesn't exist and our primary function is locating the bushwalkers safe and well."
