Body found near Hook Island may be that of missing yachtsman

UPDATE 8.00am:

THE body of the man who was missing at sea has been retrieved and brought back to land.

It is believed the man was 25 years old.

A Mackay police spokesman said investigations were continuing into the incident.

It is believed the man was a crew member on a board a charter boat, but he left the charter boat by himself in a small dingy.

RACQ Rescue services and Volunteer Marine Rescue crews searched for the man around Hook Island for several hours yesterday.

His body was retrieved at about 5pm.

The alarm was raised when he didn't return back to the charter vessel yesterday morning. 

 

2:45pm:

A BODY has been found near Hook Island today. While the body has not yet been retrieved from the water - police suspect it is that of a missing yachtsman.

Police are on standby, waiting for a dive team to come and retrieve the body which was found near a dingy.

It is understood the man was not a Mackay local and next of kin are yet to be notified.

At 9.30am RACQ CQ Rescue was stood down by water police from the search.

The rescue helicopter was then tasked to Mt Coolon for a horse fall patient.

 

11.28am:

RACQ CQ Rescue crews are searching for a missing yachtsman near Hook Island.

Crews left the Mackay hangar at 8.30am this morning.

Several other vessels are assisting with the search on the water.
