Seeing a champ's view of Scotland
WHAT does an Olympic champion and a group of schoolchildren have in common?
They both have a special place in their hearts for Scotland.
Michael Wenden competed in the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.
The Coolangatta students adopted Scotland in an adopt-a-country program organised by the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid committee.
Several students will meet with Scotland’s delegates on Friday.
Mr Wenden was at Coolangatta State School yesterday to promote the Commonwealth Games bid and to talk to the students about how to become champions.
“They (Commonwealth Games) are slightly different to an Olympic games,” Mr Wenden said.
“It’s a different level of competition and the world media isn’t there.
“It is not so intense, it’s more of a friendly games.”
Mr Wenden gave the children some valuable advice on what it would take to become a champion.
“We practiced, trained and after a lot of determination we made it to the Commonwealth Games, and you can do the same,” he said to a captivated audience.
“And if we get the Commonwealth Games then you can all go and see it.”
